YEAR 4 : Roman Shields

Year 4 have been studying the Romans this term and in our Art lessons we have been learning about the designs of the Roman shields, designing our own shields and making them.

CONNECT

We first looked carefully at some examples of Roman shields. We discussed new vocabulary such as, 'Scutum shield' and 'Shield Boss'. We learnt what the different symbols represented:

The Eagle Wings were a symbol of the Roman Army.
The Lightning Bolt was a symbol of Jupiter, King of the Gods.

.

DESIGN

The children then designed their own shields, thinking about what symbols could represent themselves or their favourite hobbies.

CREATE

To make the shields, the children covered cardboard boxes with red tissues paper and used yellow paper to draw their symbols on. They added on their 'shield boss' and outlined their symbols to help them stand out from a distance.
