BOOK WEEK 2023: MIRROR

 Book Week 2023
Mirror by Jeannie Baker

This spectacular picture book by Jeannie Baker is made up of two parts, designed to be read simultaneously, one from the left, the other from the right. Page by page, we experience the life of two boys and their families- one from inner city Sydney, Australia and the other from Morocco, North Africa. These worlds couldn't be further apart, yet with the showing of the parallel lives of the two families, we see a simple truth...that even with all the differences in landscape, language and clothing, we are all the same in the ways that really matter. We need to care for each other, we need to belong and we need to be loved by our loved ones.

Connecting with the artist: Jeannie Baker

In our whole school art project during book week, we carefully studied the pictures in the book which had been created using collage and learnt more about the illustrator/ author Jeannie Baker.

Exploring the Colour and Pattern in Moroccan Berber Rugs

In the story, the object that connects the two families is a Moroccan Berber Rug. We explored the patterns and colours in different Berber style rugs.

Designing a section of a Moroccan Rug in the Berber style

We then used the inspiration from the patterns and colours, that we explored in the Berber Rugs, to design our own section of a rug.

Making our Moroccan Berber Rugs using different collage techniques

Each year group had a different way of creating their collages for their part of the rug.
