YEAR 3: The Stone Age

Year 3 have been learning all about the Stone Age this term and to kick off our art project we read the story of 'The Lion Man' from the book: 'Vincent's Starry Night and Other Stories' by Michael Bird. The story introduces us to The Lion Man which is a pre-historic ivory sculpture believed to be between 35,000 and 40,000 years old!

Connecting

By discovering 'Lion Man' and exploring the cave paintings from the Chauvet and Lascaux Caves in France, Year 3 have been connecting with some of the first artists that are known about in history!

Observing

The children have been doing observational sketches of animals that would have been present in the Stone Age.

Exploring

They have developed their colour mixing skills by exploring the tones, tints and shades of brown.

Creating

The children created a 'rock-like' piece of paper by doing a wash of brown paint and scrunching it up. When dried, the paper feels rough and bumpy like rock. They then used charcoal and chalk pastels to draw the animals from their observational sketches to create their own cave art.
