YEAR 6: Ancient Greek Architecture

Year 6 are studying Ancient Greece this term and in Art they have been exploring the classical architecture of the Greek temples.

Connecting

The children have connected with the Ancient Greek Architect 'Ictinus' from the mid 5th Century BC. It is believed that he designed the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Apollo at Bassae.

Observing

The children have carefully observed the shapes and lines used in the buildings, especially in the different types of columns: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.

Exploring

Using a variety of art materials, they explored how to create tone (the lightness and darkness of a colour) ranging from black to white.

Creating

They then carefully observed one of the Ancient Greek columns and created a striking tonal piece of artwork using paint and oil pastels to show the different light and dark areas.
